As Jamie Hollier of Digitallearn.org states in the site's first blog post:
"One in five Americans don’t use the internet, which means it will take longer for them to find a job, they have limited access to educational attainment, and they are more isolated,
among other issues. Many organizations are working to decrease the
digital divide and increase inclusion in our digital communities."
So DigitalLearn.org and the Public Library Association have put together the beginnings of a site that looks so clean and simple. What I love is that they have released it before it is completed. The target date is in June 2013. But Jamie states it will never be finished because technology and learning technology will never be finished. Sometimes I feel the speed at which it advances will rip my head clean off!
I encourage you to check out this great resource and share it with others.
It's being featured on another great site called EveryonOn which is powered by Connect2Compete which I've discussed before. GCFLearnFree is another site it features which I've raved about for years now.
Become familiar with these sites because you do not need to reinvent the wonderful online training these links can provide. Just direct people to them - and do it often!

These are a few of my favorite Training Resources
Actually, these are all I know of... I maintain this list on our Intranet. Today I was asked by @TechSoup4Libs...

Connect2Compete - ADD YOUR LIBRARY!
"Connect2Compete is a national nonprofit organization bringing together leaders from communities, the private sector, and leading foundations." This national campaign will be launched in 2013. Read more of their mission here.
"Part of Connect2Compete is an Ad Council campaign that will drive people to digital literacy training programs. To prepare for the campaign, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski announced the development of a new Digital Literacy Finder Tool that will help people find nearby locations for digital literacy training. The Finder Tool will be populated with thousands of locations comprising the nation’s libraries, schools, public computing centers, non-profit training providers, and America’s Job Centers." All libraries that provide ANY type of digital literacy training be it formal classes or informal one on one, PLEASE add yourself to the Finder Tool by going to this link and adding your information. An innovative zip-code locator tool will combine all entries into a nationwide database. You definitely want to be listed there!

Train Your Staff and Patrons with My PC Series
Microsoft has launched a new resource called My PC Series. I attended a Webinar today from TechSoup. I'm sure they will be posting the archive soon. This is a FREE Windows 7 online curriculum to help provide "jargon-free, basic computer training for an adult audience". So, the only catch is you have to be using the Windows 7 operating system for the lessons.
The curriculum consists of ten 1 hour workshops that teach 'getting started' PC topics (Chat with IM, Create a Digital Movie, Digital Camera Tips and Tricks, Pick the Right PC, Start Here with Windows 7, Stay Safe With Windows 7...), four 3 hour workshops (Getting Started with Windows 7, Digital Photo Editing, Creative Slideshow, Connecting with Friends & Family) and a longer 12 hour Intro to Windows 7 course for business and home users. All of the materials are already created from Instructor Guides to PowerPoint Presentations to Activity Sheets. Plus there is a Student area of the Website where class resources are posted for students. See this Adoption Checklist to see what to do next to get started. I already downloaded a lot of the materials and will plan on using them as we move into Windows 7.

Create Lists Training Scheduled

It has been scheduled for Tuesday 5/3/11 from 9:00am to 12:00pm in the training room at the System Office. We have space for a few more people, so feel free to register if you are interested. For anyone who is involved with training in libraries, you don't want to miss the new ALA Learning Wiki! The wiki is just starting up, so go over and contribute what you've already done and see if there is information on there that could help you in a current project. I'm anxious to see what gets added to the Needs Analysis page in the Managing Training - Best Practices area as I'm currently developing one of these for my System. This advocacy education, originally designed for public libraries participating in the Gates Foundation Opportunity Online hardware grants program, has benefited more than 3,500 librarians and library supporters across 32 states. Following training, the vast majority of participants were better advocates for their libraries—feeling more confident in their abilities and more excited about advocacy. As a result, more than 98 percent of participating libraries achieved their funding goals. Through the generosity of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, PLA is now able to offer this training to all ALA members.

Milanof-Schock Library Upgrades Training Lab
Congratulations to the Milaof-Schock Library for their Training Lab upgrade. John and Jordan, in the IT department here, are rolling out the new machines. Aren't they pretty? What a difference!
